Phantom Letters follows a group of ordinary Americans who took on the terrifying and exciting job of flying fighter planes during the Vietnam War. The desire to fly and a rigorous training process were not all they had in common. Many of them also shared the obvious struggle of being away from their homes and families.

Author Gary Thrasher admits, in this account of his life, to finally understanding - after forty-some years - the price they all paid to serve their country. Killing and conflict have left permanent marks on his subconscious, as well as the lives of the people he loves.

Containing actual letters written home to his wife over 40 years ago, while stationed in Vietnam (which were kept by his wife through it all) Thrasher reveals his love for his family, but also the bile of death and destruction.

Thrasher’s narrative and letters convey how a 25-year-old romantic and his family - in the midst of a great battle - are equally as affected by separation and the unknowns of combat. And, as they go through time, they also show how everyone is changed by - and adapts to - the challenges that arise from war.

This wide-reaching and inspiring true narrative of an ex-Vietnam War fighter pilot has something for everyone. It is a tale of battle, family, and hardships. But most of all, it is a tale of love.

PHANTOM LETTERS eBook GARY THRASHER Reviews

Grandpa, I am so glad you wrote this book. I don't know if you ever read this but thank you for your service and being the greatst grandpa ever, your grandaughter )*
This is an amazing account of the most difficult times, dramatic, gripping, sensitive, sad, funny, loving, pitiful, and triumphant accounts of Vietnam that I have ever read. It took me back 43 years to when I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam. One does not have to be an F4 pilot to experience the feelings described by the author of this book.
RIDE ALONG....

Ride in the back seat of the F-4 Phantom Navy fighter as author Gary Thrasher tells the tales of his 228 combat missions over both North and South Vietnam in 1966-67.
PHANTOM LETTERS is a candid and revealing memoir of a young, ambitious first lieutenant, serving as an Air Force co-pilot flying on progressively tougher missions over Hanoi.
Thrasher gives no quarter to politicians, inept leaders and noncombatants who stood in the way of the knights of the battlefield, who in reality were merely pawns of war.
Unique to this war story is the inclusion of personal letters home to his wife Carole and son who were at home in Nebraska dealing with family, finances, home-life and the uncertainty of when or if she would see her husband again.
Thrasher is a good story-teller with a witty sense of humor.
It was a good read...
I could not put the book down once I started reading it. This is the first time I have read about someone who served in Vietnam and I was so humbled by your story. I did not have close friends or family that served in that horrible war, but you really opened my eyes. THANK YOU - not only for a beautiful story of love, anger, frustration, humor, fear, empathy, gut wrenching feelings and so much more -- but a very belated Thank You for your service to our nation.
I have known the author for over 40 years, but gained an incredible, fresh insight into the man and his character through his very well written book. Gary writes about his flying experiences with exciting action sequences, interspersed with sensitive letters home to Carol, his wife. The link to his family was his psychological tie to that "normal" life back home in Nebraska. He shares his feelings and experiences with a refreshing honesty and clarity. All who have served our country in the air, at sea, or on the ground can relate to the tough balance between military responsibilities and those of of a spouse and parent. It is a very good book and well worth your reading time.
A rare insight into human experiences in Viet Nam War. Poorly edited...making it difficult, but not impossible to read.
I like the book as one of the characters in it and I have a mutual friend.
