Take the best parts of the pied piper of fairy-tale fame, a couple of wizarding schools not too similar to Hogwarts but diametrically opposed to each other, and have one steal the leader of the student body from the other, which of course leads to rescue missions and wizarding battles. Throw in a couple of teen romances, some sibling rivalry, necromancy, other magics and you have got one captivating story. While this is a middle book of a series there are enough hints of the results of the first book's actions leading to the current state of affairs to not be frustrating, but still enough to make us want to read the first one as soon as possible for further details and the next one for the rest of the story. After reading and thoroughly enjoying “Inquisitor” the first part of The Book of Jerrick series, I was keen to read the follow up. I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed “Piper” even more than “Inquisitor”. The book has a darker edge, which made for a captivating and more engrossing read. The plot romps along at a nice pace. The text paints some really powerful visuals while not interrupting the flow of the story. Despite being part of a series, and despite leaving the reader wanting more, “Piper” reaches a satisfactory conclusion.
A particularly enjoyable aspect of this second book, which I wasn’t expecting, is the use of classic tales, which are re-mastered to suit the unfolding story, and then woven into the narrative in a particularly interesting way.
From the first book to this, there is some great development in both plot and character, and a marked advancement in the author’s skill to tell a tale. All three points bode well for the next instalment, which I hope is not too distant as I am really looking forward to seeing where this series will go next.
If you like a well told fantasy in a real, modern setting, I recommend giving this series a go.
Piper is the second book in the Jerrick series.
In the first book, Michael has been spirited away / rescued from the Grand Inquisitors to their enemy The Council. It’s not clear which side is good and which is evil as neither are either.
We get a bit more about fairy tale history in this book, with Grimm being a librarian and what legend says is The Pied Piper of Hamlyn being the Piper of the title.
This is quite a long book and gets exciting in parts. There’s also some rather nasty characters and death is always on the outskirts. I found this to be a well-rounded story with some great characters.
