Birthday Ideas is a humorous short story that considers a world where birthdays are made easy by following the simple guidelines of the author and spending little time and effort on getting your gifts. For example, buying this digital book would qualify as a great birthday idea for men or women, as it takes up little or no space and it is not a pair of socks or a shirt that may need to be returned.
The other short stories are funny whether talking about birthdays ideas, driving for 24 hours, accidentally forgetting a spouses birthday, black ice, hating onions, carving a tooth out of soap, plunger etiquette, or the differences between boxers and briefs.
One story,"LinkedIn With Toothless Kenny" tells the story of working one day at a state fair with a guy named Kenny (missing quite a few teeth) and the bond that did not develop.
Another favorite, "God Are You There? It's Me, Jason", tells the story of a dad dealing with the onslaught of questions from his ten year old daughter and her friend, who just had the puberty talk at school. You know, the talk where the boys go play dodgeball in the gym and the girls are brought into a room and told all the deep secrets of girlhood.
Here is an excerpt from "God are you there? It's Me, Jason"
I couldn't drive fast enough, fueled by ten-year olds on some kind of puberty knowledge speed. Nothing applies indirect pressure to a gas pedal like, "Why would you use a tampon. That's totally gross. Putting that there... Does mom use a tampon or a pad....can you brush pubic hair...What happens to boys.... What's the white goop that comes out of them? " Lila said. "Has that happened to you?" her best friend chimed in, suddenly drawing me into the vortex of the tornado – minus the calm feeling.
There. Down for the count. Officially speechless and unable to understand what just hit me. I have absolutely no responses for them, and I'm confident that I won't, even if they checked back in ten or twenty years.
I had a vision of being stopped for speeding. If I were stopped I would ask the officer to come and sit in my car and have the girls talk their new talk. The officer would quickly get out and give me a siren and lights escort home.
Other stories include, Blood Eye, The Bachelor, Doldrums and Blackheads, A Tale of Two Sons, Soap Tooth Fairy, The Snowmobile Rodeo, Plunger Etiquette, Past Me vs. Future Me, Boxers, Briefs or..., How to Spell Quantity and Other Curse Words, Poop A Gateway Word, and More.
The author, Jason A. Spafford, has been writing humor and studying the effects of saying funny things for a number of years. He has produced and directed a feature film, among other film and video work over the past twenty years, as well as writing scripts for TV and film. His other two works are books of poetry and, as one would expect, those are just not that funny.

Birthday Ideas & Other Humorous Stories by Jason Spafford is literally the funniest book that I have read in a long time. I laughed out loud multiple times, eliciting concerned looks from the rest of the family who are unaccustomed to Mom breaking out in peals of laughter at random and unprovoked intervals. 'This book,' is how I answered their looks. The book is compilation of short stories about life in general, and life as a husband and parent in particular. The every day moments that we all live through, and perhaps take for granted, are gone over with a hilariously humorous fine toothed comb, to come out smooth, wrinkle free, and uber entertaining.
Part of the hilarity is the parts of myself that I recognized in each of the stories. He gets me. And I would be willing to bet that he gets you too! Read this book!

Birthday Ideas Other Humorous Stories edition by Jason Spafford Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
In this collection of short stories, Jason A. Spafford, has found a way to look at the humorous side of parenting. Anyone who has kids will find themselves nodding their heads in agreement with some of the situations as well as laughing out loud at the antics of these characters. One of the best is "God are you there, it's me Jason?", it is a conversation that many parents can totally relate to or are secretly hoping they will never need to have.
Jason Spafford is a great writer and he knows how to present a situation in its most comedic light. This is a must read and great fun.
If Jerry Seinfeld wasn't named Jerry Seinfeld, had three kids and grew up on a potato farm in Northern Wisconsin, his name would be Jason Spafford. Full of comic adventure, worst laid plans, and a lifetime's worth of horribly awkward but hilarious moments, each of these wonderfully short vignettes shines a new light on the many unasked-for trophies that make up fatherhood and family life. From just barely surviving the harrowing experience of overhearing his ten-year-old daughter and her best friend's dread-filled dissection of the just-learned-about-in-health-class PERIOD, to an unwanted "best-practices" discussion with his mother over where to keep a toilet plunger, Spafford is a sharp-witted master of the uncomfortable and the better-left-unsaid moments of life. A perfect gift for that family member in everyone's family who seems to always find themselves attempting to navigate the rocks and rapids of life minus life-vest and paddle.
Jason Spafford has a written a hilarious look at parenting and life in a middle class household in his Birthday Ideas & Other Humorous Stories.
A professional 'Stad', or stay at home dad, he writes about the ups and downs and ins and outs of raising children and being married in such a funny way, that I laughed out loud.
In one chapter, he writes about accidentally throwing away one of his children's teeth, before the tooth fairy had come! The hilarity that ensues as he attempts to replace the tooth is worthy of the Three Stooges, or Laurel and Hardy.
And that is why I loved it. It was clean, bright, homespun humor that kept me excited for the next chapter, and the next, and the next.
